I have been very fortunate to have the opportunity of working with this great non profit: MOKA. If you are looking for another organization for your charitable contributions, this is a great one!

MOKA is "a charitable organization serving as a change agent for individuals with disabilities throughout western Michigan. We provide supports and services aimed at helping each person become valued citizens in our local communities. We provide a variety of services including support and treatment in specialized community based homes, training and support to live in the community, building skills and awareness with the goal of employment, skill development and job placement as well as family support of children with autism and other disabilities. Though we provide a variety of programs, we are best known for our gentle culture which helps everyone feel safe and affirmed and treats all with the greatest respect."

Great wedding on MSU's campus this weekend with the talented Meg, of Goodman Images!

I took the beautiful, winding backroads to this fall session in Battle Creek to photograph Josh, a dear friend's nephew. When I arrived I was in awe of the lovely, fertile photographic landscapes on their property.

Now, I have to admit, the most country I get is Willie Nelson, Lucinda Williams, and Kathleen Edwards, but some of the jams Josh, his brother and friend were kickin' out rocked my camera :) I always have a great time at all of my sessions, but this one was truly a blast!! Thanks Josh (and co.)!!!

I believe each photograph, each portrait, each wedding, should represent that one moment in time. a collaboration between the client(s) and myself. one that should stretch me artistically.

Before each session, I have been thinking about ideas and concepts. I work on little sketches in an tiny 2009 Moleskin day planner that I have refurbished into "Idea" (my personal idea book). I talk with my clients before the session to get a feel for the type of session that is in their mind. Next comes the session--those moments, the collaboration, the ideas and concepts that are realized and/or that typically transform into something more interesting than what I had initially planned.

It always has worked this way for me. In photo school. With writing. With sketching. Even with cooking. With anything that I've had a hand in creating.

I don't have a consistent location nor do I use the same props. If I do find myself photographing in the same location, I look for different spots, for different angles. The only consistency is that push within to consistently create beautiful and interesting images that reveal some of the life, love, and creativity of my clients.

These below images represent one of these moments.

The lovely Ashley, winner of a mid-Michigan beauty pageant, and whose beauty goes well beyond skin-deep, is featured below. She drove down from northern Michigan for a Fashion/Portfolio session in October. I enjoyed her how at ease she was in front of the camera, her sense of adventure, her laughter and all of the fun moments, her impeccable grammar :) and just what a delight she was to photograph!

Lara Parent Photography {Herman Miller's Lifework Blog & Cerentha Harris} Talking Walls | West Michigan Photographer

A number of months ago, Cerentha Harris, writer, editor, and blogger for Herman Miller's excellent Lifework blog and for her personal (lovely and inspirational) design blog, this is a design blog and I connected. Cerentha posted images of my studio/office at that moment in time. (That link is here.)

After that initial post, she came up with the interesting concept of "Talking Walls". In her words, "The idea is to create a kind of visual diary of space...over the next year."

I change my main wall--which has actually been transformed into a very large tack board--throughout the year. I fill it with images, objects, old photographs, new photographic ideas, bits of nature and nostalgia--anything that inspires me. It's a great way of putting everything I love to look at and am thinking about right in front of me.

And so, the wall and my space have changed again. Whiter and lower and very full.

I am so thrilled to have the second installment of "Talking Walls" on today's Herman Miller's Lifework blog.

My dear amiga, Karn, sent me these photos of how her family has displayed the lovely Jane in their home.

(She also sent an AMAZING jar of Blackberry Lavender jam with a terrific story and accompanying collateral--love this girl and the creativity that has been with her since I met her in high school. In addition to her passion for mid-century modern design**, she is also a phenomenal artist and painter; I hope she will have a website up soon!--but, I digress and that is another post :))

I love the color canvas (20' x 30") of Jane amongst Karn's husband's collection of beachy things: the stones, beach glass, and driftwood play well off of the canvas. I also adore how the collection is grouped together drawing the eye to the theme/love of the water/beach.

The location of the second canvas (16" x 24"): Peter (Jane's brother) filming Jane with my old Super 8 camera :) plays well against the kitchen wall and is able to be seen from a couple of different rooms. I love the black and white image on the white walls amongst the warmth of the kitchen.

(**Can you spot the fab Eames walnut stool, the Eames Lounge Chair with matching ottoman and another Eames chair in the second photo? :)

Another lovely, lovely senior fashion session with the lovely Sophie. I had been dreaming of doing another session in an orchard...and, when I pulled up to the location Sophie suggested, I cannot begin to explain how filled with joy I was....Complete fate.

I brought a vintage red dress, Sophie had a few other antiques, great wardrobe choices and her french horn. The vintage camera was also hers. She has a great eye (I just discovered this when I looked through her photos posted on her Facebook page) and is taking a photography class. It was an amazing collaboration. Merci beaucoup, Sophie! We battled incredibly high winds (15 knots) and 1-2 foot waves.
We got wet. We got sandy. We had hair in our mouths. (My own hair was covering the lens more than once.)
The wind and waves almost carried away my lens cap...We were eating sand by the end of the session!

Sometimes when you pull the camera away from your face, you see natural moments. This first photo was inspired by the lovely Carly in a natural moment.

With all of this rain today, I was inspired to post two lush images from this recent session>>look for more images in the coming weeks.

I love photographing seniors: their confidence, their natural expressions and moments, waiting to capture them being themselves, their uncertainty in front of the camera at times (really this happens with everyone :) I'm sure you can relate. I know I can), and that lovely, lovely age where everything is in front of you and yet childhood is not too far behind.

Carly was full of grace, beauty, adventure, and laughter. It was such a wonderful session. Thank you to one of my dearest friends, Lotta, for connecting us and for tagging along with the fab Lily!

Jane::Glimpse of Senior Session/Tribute to Robert Longo/Things I Wish I knew at 17 | Lara Parent Photography | West Michigan Photography

Sometime I'll get around to telling the whole story of how I met Jane and about our sessions...an amazing senior that made it so difficult for me to put down my camera (Thank you Jane!) As I was editing her images, this image struck me as both a homage to Robert Longo and as a connection to being 17 again.

All of this I'm sure is rooted in the recent reunions, conversations and re-connections I've had with old friends>>the ones who really, really know you: your history, your successes, all of the dumb stuff you did and still do and yet accept you unconditionally. Friends, who, even after years have gone by, time picks up where it has left off when you are together. (You lovely people know who you are and how much I adore you...)

It is always so easy to look back and say, "I wish I knew (insert lesson here) when I was (insert age here)...." But you didn't. You made decisions and choices, you had moments of happiness and maybe a few regrets. It is what it is. It was what it was. And, your choices are a part of who you are today. But....if I were 17 again, I would always know....

_To make sure that when you think you are thinking with your brain, that it is really not your heart.

_To take way more risks and to keep taking them.

_To be a little selfish when you need to.

_To listen to your parents. As I look back, they were 99.9% (and still are) right. I know it sounds crazy––and it is––but they know you and have your best interests at heart, despite what it seems.

_To realize that is a wonderful thing to know that you have stood up for what you knew was right: people, causes, situations.

_To tap into your own individuality and to never be afraid of being who you are at that moment. That what it's all about.

_To not worry about wearing ridiculous clothing and makeup (or lack thereof). When you are 17, you can get away with anything fashion-wise.

_To be relentless/persistent about your passions: like when you asked your parents to buy you a camera over and over and over again and it worked. That was a good choice.

_To put your own dreams in front of boys. There will always be another boy who will come along.

_To buy that round trip ticket around the world like your friend did. She was right and had an amazing year.

_To remember that being open to people has its risks and rewards, but typically it's worth it.

_To know that there is always time....for everything....even when you are (insert age here)...:)

The evening I spent walking and riding and photographing through acres and acres of the lovely Buskirk's family farm was such a nice change of pace and such a lovely experience. Their farm has been in their family for generations; just hearing the stories and the connection to the past was fascinating. It was a perfect evening! Enjoy and thanks you guys!!

Another very fun, beautiful senior with spunk, style and confidence I so love to see in seniors.

The first time I photographed her was a couple of years ago, on a beautiful, sunny summer day.
I was in my living room, she was walking her dog, and I ran to get my camera. Now, I do have a habit of
meeting and photographing strangers , but fortunately,
Lily is my neighbor and didn't think my request was too odd.

If you have been following my blog from time to time, you'll notice that I am far from being a consistent blogger. Desire to blog is always there, but life: sunny days, beach walks with the man + dog I adore, and, yes, even yard work or some necessary swifting away of the dog hair take precedence. So, while this is yet another post that I have blogged in my brain numerous times! Here it finally is!

Meet Audrey. Lovely, equus girl, and simply a blast to work with! I had such a great time with her senior session! She is simply lovely...her expressions...gorgeous smile...thoughtful moments..great punch of color outfits...

Thank you Betsy and Sami for connecting us. And, thank you to Audrey for being open to all of my whims :) Lest I forget: Ellen, Audrey's fab mom, for assisting during the session! Way to hold that reflector, Mom!

If only I had more wall space....I'd have even more art and photos up. So thankful for my studio/office space!

I was always that kid who loved looking at family photos and home movies: our family's and other family's. Really, I didn't even have to know the family, I'd still be interested in their images. I still go into antique stores and thrift stores specifically looking for other people's photos. l have a small collection: from old daguerreotypes to ones taken with the lovely Dianas and Brownies to the great 70s polaroids and the ones with rounded corner photos. I don't know any of these people, but I love the stories that I create from them. And then there are all of the boxes of 8x10 prints and binders filled with chromes from photo classes....

Having photos of our family in our house and in my work space is essential to me. I smile, I remember, and I think how incredible it is that that certain moments in time--especially the unexpected ones--were captured. They help me remember my childhood, they are a glimpse of my parents or husband as children, and they are a window into the past. Tiny, beautiful narratives...

Over the past few weeks, R and I have been digging through old family photos and have had the fabulous Michelle and Kate at Four Corners Framing Company frame these up for us. Lots of white mat board and clean white wooden frames.

Holland is so fortunate to have a number of excellent frame shops and gallery spaces. This is one of our favorites! Michelle and Kate have a great selection, wonderful eyes, and stand behind their work. Michelle also is a painter and has a number of great pieces in the store and photos of her commissions. When I had my first solo show at at museum out west, they did all of the framing; when I needed something yesterday, I go to them. Thanks ladies!!

If you need something framed, instead of rushing to Michael's or Hobby Lobby, think local. A lot of our local retailers are surprisingly reasonable.

Cerentha Harris, writer, editor, and blogger for Herman Miller's excellent Lifework blog and for her own design blog this is a design blog has two such blogs to check out and follow. You'll get your fill of inspiration, beauty, history and great writing. (Be warned, though, you'll also find it extremely difficult not to spend a few hours poring through their archives. I speak from experience...)

These photographs were taken at a fantastic photography workshop with the über-talented, Carlos Baez. I have always been in love with light and lighting, and at this workshop, there were great moments of reminder, learning and inspiration. Carlos has a ton of knowledge and talent and shares freely. He also is a straight shooter. I love that in a person.

Kaylee, a senior at Grand Haven High School, was one of our fantastic models I had the good fortune of driving down to the workshop with her and her mom (wonderful people!). My over-excitement brought us to Chicago a few hours...early...(for those of you who really know me, I know this seems inconceivable!) So...have camera+gorgeous girl=make pictures! So we both warmed up prior to the workshop and got in a few frames just blocks from Oprah's, Harpo studio.

All of these photos were toned post-processing. While I like the originals a lot, I miss the darkroom and love to experiment. But, the truth of the matter is, this is what happens at 4:30 in the morning when a girl cannot sleep.

It was a Christmas gift. A wonderful surprise. A book...

I loved this session. I adore these children. Their parents...yes, I love you both too. You are an amazing family....

This session was truly a collaboration. Russ (dad) did a great job helping the kids pick out clothing of their choice and coordinating the whole adventure. I came armed with my tiny storyboard full of sketches/ideas and the kids totally ran with it as they began chiming in with their own ideas. One of the best quotes of the day was shared among us all as we constantly kept saying, "Wait! I have an idea! Hold on! I have another idea!"

Inspiration was everywhere. We were peers collaborating. They helped me conquer the adult fear of heights I suddenly developed as they coached me up the wooden planks (freshly nailed for me :) ) and onto the top of the treehouse; we exchanged more ideas; they did crazy climbing and hanging stunts; it was running; it was laughing; it was jumping; it was craziness; it was bliss; there was a grass battle...they gave me a piece of my childhood back. Thanks my friends... I hope to see you all soon... xx oo :)Lara

I knew it was only a matter of time before the MEDIA found out about the CCAC and CRR....

One of our great friends, Char (see a few blog posts back), the executive director of the Chicago Children's Advocacy Center was recently in the Chicago Tribune (see this link). The CCAC has helped tens of thousands of children heal from physical and sexual abuse. The Tribune article tells of one of its many stories of hope and healing.

Here is a lovely photo of Char with her (currently) fiery red hair (her hair, I must mention, has been EVERY possible earth tone color. I really can't say which color I love best: black, red, platinum, copper...they all work....:) What I can say is that her hair color matches her passion for making a difference in the lives of children and that I love this woman...

I met Char (Rivard) Rivette through an old Michigan State friend. I later met her husband, Brendan (Rivard) Murphy through Char. We love these people. They are great friends that we see not often enough, but the type of compadres that whenever you get together, you always catch up right where you left off. Whenever we get together there is laughing, there are dogs, and there is always celebrating.

I met Marian Heibel Richardson through Holden whose senior pictures I took last fall. Her husband, Russ suggested we meet and possibly work out an artist's trade: she needed some photos taken for her website and for a feature in Communication Arts. I am always in the market for art and I do love to barter!

Marian's downtown Holland, 8th Street gallery/studio is just up a few stairs. Its walls are filled with her bold and colorful work. Dark outlines. Playful. Happy. A place you want to just sit and take it all in. It was great getting to know her and looking at some of her past and current projects. The minute I saw her work I loved the illustrative quality and thought of a perfect match: Marian's style+Tujac+Lida (Char and Brendan's dogs).

Char and Brendan love art and in addition to be fabuloso amigos, they have always been wonderful patrons to me. They own two pieces from a body of large format photographs entitled, Liquid Series. Earlier this year Char commissioned two photographs of children for her new office. Char is the Executive Director for a great non-profit in Chicago: Chicago Children's Advocacy Center. I love C&B. I love their dogs. When I asked Char to send me some photos of her dogs, the ones she sent cracked me up. Picture: dogs flopped over one another, on furniture, in bed, in an apron next to a tiny grill, and then a few looking innocent.

Senior Session: Molly: JCrew Catalogue Meets Fashion | West Michigan Senior Photographer

Molly was amazing (love her whole fam!)!! Her eyes just draw you in to every photo...

When Diane Facebooked me about doing senior photos for Molly, I couldn't have been more thrilled. We had a great time at the beach and around town, chasing the light (and making our own) just as the sun was quickly setting! (These sessions never last long enough!)

When she showed me the clothes she had selected for the session, coupled with her fresh, natural, and fashionista look, I knew we were in for a JCrew meets urban fashion session!

I posted these awhile ago on Facebook, but wanted to officially blog these as well.

Awesome Alex | West Michigan Senior Photographer

When Alex's aunt and a friend of mine, Pam, emailed me about setting up a senior session with Alex, I was excited and excited to meet the guy behind the stories. :)

We (Pam and Alex's mom, Jane) all had a great time. Alex was open to any location from urban, to nature to beach and had a great natural, relaxed way in front of the camera, and a gorgeous set of baby blues!

Me: "Hey would you mind standing in the middle of the brush (of trees)/sitting on the ground/climbing up here/etc.,.?"

Alex: "Whatever. No problem."

We had a great senior session a couple of weeks ago with Rebecca! After we were both warmed up, it was great to watch her work the camera. She had a ton of runway moves and was an absolute doll to work with! I absolutely LOVE the blue gingham dress on her! Blue gingham. Summer. Lovely.

Dutch Fun and Fun | West Michigan Children's Photographer

When Todd (dad of these 2 animated beauties!) emailed me to schedule a children's session (thanks Tamara and Rob—I wish you guys weren't leaving for Thailand so soon!!) as an anniversary gift to his wife, of course I smiled! Who doesn't love thoughtful and creative men! Todd wanted an outdoor session and some photos of the kids in their Tulip Time costumes.

Their house was lovely: color, decor, warmth, with so many photo opportunities, that we started there. (Wait till you see the YELLOW couch! Incredible!!! and of course, the kids on it: gorgeous!) Todd and the kids' caregiver, Sherry, did a great job laying out the many outfit options! Great colors and patterns from which to choose! (Thanks, guys!) We then ventured out into the sunshine and the kids strutted their photo magic!

As for Tulip Time in summer.....I thought....very fun! and hmmm....how to highlight the kids in their costumes without the background competing. We came up with a great solution: studio lighting on a grey sweep. Great pop! The kids, their costumes, and the lighting made me think of a recent Dutch Masters exhibit I had just seen in Vancouver, so I tweaked a few with a little brown toning.

This really has nothing to do with LEED certification, a smaller carbon footprint, or anything in the wonderful traditional green sense. It's just about color—lots of great green and gorgeous kiddos! I love this family! They are one of my go to families when I need to test out a new lens or need a reading pormotional photo for Holland Public Schools!
They are always open and gracious to my requests.

When Lisa (mom) talked to me about doing portraits of the kids, I couldn't have been more excited and flattered. Enjoy these lovely siblings. It was great to have a session in town, what a lovely city we live in! What a great time we had! The kids were incredible in front of the lens...their playfulness and creativity really comes through.

The Gorgeous Glass Family | West Michigan Children's Photographer

When Maureen emailed me earlier this spring about scheduling a summer session,
I immediately smiled. I love this family and had such a great time with them this winter!!
It was still that chilly spring weather outside, but I was already excited!

As the Michigan summer got into full bloom, we scheduled our session on my old stomping grounds: Reed's Lake and Gaslight Village in East.

Mo and Casey were playful and fun in front of the camera. Kylie was up and about, cruising around
with all of us chasing after her. And, we all had a blast with Avery telling secrets...plus, this girl has the moves!!! Seriously.
We were all cracking up in amazement. It was a riot watching her expressions change and the way she would just pose. They all worked the camera! It was a great collaboration! Thanks guys! :)

Laughing Man Prompts Rescue Bid

"A helicopter rescue team were scrambled after screams were heard in a German forest - only to find a man laughing his head off at a new book. A woman dialed 999 after she thought she could hear someone being tortured at the woodland near Elmstein, western Germany. But 'victim' Roland Hofmann was astonished when armed police surrounded his car which he had driven into the forest and ordered him to give himself up and release his hostage. He told police he had gone to the forest to read 'in peace and quiet'."

While this seems like it could be from the National Enquirer...it's the real deal :)

My Birthday Surprise! A different post....

About 3 weeks before my birthday I began receiving these mysterious postcards. Images from Holland, MI and Tarp, Germany with a single black stick-on letter over each image.

I had no idea if they were from my German inlaws, my family or ? I never suspected R who played along so well asking me if I thought the message was auf Deutsch or in English. He kept asking me if any of the cards had umlauts or the Eszett (the quirky looking German "s") just to throw me off!

Our mail carrier was fascinated and showed them around the local post office. He and another co-worker took this same idea and did their own versions! It was a bonding moment.

I kept looking for secret codes/markings on the cards. I organized the colored address labels and colored hearts by color, by ROYGBIV; I looked for secret markings. I tried to create German words like liebe and Geburtstag and English words like happy and you. The letters/postcards arrived so randomly--even though he had a chart with the letter and day sent that he later showed me!--that it was challenging for me to figure out.

So.....here our 2 images: the first, my favorite postcard and the first one that arrived; the second, the lovely message! I am so dang lucky! Enjoy!

When Sami told her mom, "I want Ms. Parent to photograph my wedding," I was beyond touched...When I was teaching 4th and 5th grade, Sami was one of my awesome students who I have fortunately stayed in touch with. The wedding and everyone, was gorgeous. Sami was the sunshine, as evident from the photos. A shout out to the fab Dan Irving for getting all of the great "guy shots" and for second shooting that day! I photographed this beautiful family at their home earlier this year. Kylie the sweet little bundle of joy was so great for the photos and Kylie was an absolute riot.

I love connecting with kids and getting into their world. It makes for the best photographs!

I always so moved at how much love there is in the world...Here's the intro. of the photo story of two lovely and beautiful people: Cindy and John. Thank you for being such a delight to work with and for such kind words. I am so happy you both found each other!
